Phillip Hommes

COMPETITIVE INSTRUCTOR

is a Minneapolis-based dance instructor, choreographer, and musician originally from Two Harbors, MN. Growing up as a competitive dancer with Duluth Dance Center for twelve years, Philip specialized in jazz, contemporary, and tap, receiving various prestigious titles and overall high points both regionally and nationally.

Also a competitive gymnast, Philip developed high-level acrobatic and tumbling skills that he intertwined with his dance education. He then went on to pursue his Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, graduating with high distinction in 2021. Here, he had the opportunity to work with and learn from multiple dance artists, both local and international, including Pramila Vasudevan, Eko Supriyanto, Annie Hanauer, and Alito Allesi.

Through his college course work with distinguished dance scholars, Philip developed an in depth understanding of movement theory, social contexts, and composition. Additionally, his collegiate choreographic talents were recognized through a hand-selected panel, obtaining an invitation to showcase his work at the North Central American Collegiate Dance Association 2020 conference.

As a teacher and choreographer, Philip’s work has won choreography awards in addition to judge’s recognitions and overall top scores at a variety of competitions. With over five years of teaching experience, he promotes supportive and thoughtful learning environments for students of all ages and experiences, emphasizing the importance of not only multi-dimensional technical excellence, but also artistry, authenticity, and collaboration. Philip has proudly been a part of SMDAC since 2021.
